Freescale Semiconductor’s 8-bit SG Family of microcontrollers (MCUs) is a mid to low-end offering designed for LIN slave, general market and space-constrained applications. Based on the S08 core, the SG offers up to 40 MHz of CPU performance using Freescale’s 0.25μ flash to push the boundaries of 8-bit into the range of 16-bit MCU performance. Like all S08s, the SG offers on-chip emulation/debug that reduces development time, since changes can be made in-application and in real-time. The SG helps to lower cost, save board space and improve quality with on-chip components by eliminating the need for external crystal, LVI circuit, voltage regulator, I/O mux, watchdog circuit, ADC and development tools.

The SG family is also pin-compatible with the EL and SL families. This flexibility allows for upgrading and downgrading without major board redesign or long and expensive development times.

An application focus area of the SG family is Local Interconnect Network (LIN). LIN is a UART-based, single master, multiple slave networking architecture originally developed for automotive sensor and actuator networking applications.
